March 22 2014 The leader of Svoboda met with the General Secretary of the UN

On the 21 March, the leader of Svoboda Oleh Tiahnybok and representatives of other parliamentary factions met with delegation of the United Nations headed by the General Secretary of the UN Mr Ban Ki-Moon. The current political situation in Ukraine was discussed.

The leader of nationalists informed the General Secretary of the UN about the events in Crimea and stated that there is hope the international community will help with that matter.

"Regardless of Moscow's aggression against Ukraine, we chose to take a peaceful position. However, now in Crimea people who speak Ukrainian or use Ukrainian symbolic are beaten; Crimean Tatars are threatened. It is obvious that the referendum which was held was illegal (according to the Ukrainian law all referendums should be held over the entire country) and it was also held under duress.

It is important for us that the UN and other international organizations recognize Russia as the aggressor. Region must be demilitarized - Russia must withdraw its troops. We ask for understanding of our position as patriots who are willing to protect their state" - said Oleh Tiahnybok.

The General Secretary of the UN Mr Ban Ki-Moon thanked all present for expressing their arguments and positions and stated: "I am here to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Ukraine!".
